Let them eat cake...

Yesterday was my husband's birthday, and it was also one of the greyest days in January so far.

To lift the mood and celebrate his big day I made him this mega cake. To reduce our carbon footprint the candles have been limited to one per decade!

I hardly ever bother icing cakes (unless it's Christmas) as you can probably tell from my "slap it all over with a spatula" icing technique. Typically people in this house aren't that bothered by what a cake looks like, but size definitely matters.

Clearly not a health food...but I think it's necessary at this time of year.

New Year, New Blog, New Me!

Hello,

I'm Rebecca, owner of this small corner of the internet. I left my job as an engineer in the oil industry a couple of months ago to set up my own small business making soft furnishings. Without giving too much  away, a big birthday is looming, so I think it qualifies as a genuine "mid-life crisis".

I am nearing the end of my Diploma in Professional Curtain Making and Soft Furnishings with the National Design Academy. I hope to use this blog to showcase my portfolio work, keep in touch with friends and share random observations on life in general.

I live in Surrey with my husband, teenage son and assorted pets.

Welcome to my journey from chartered engineer to cottage industry. Will I be successful as a down-shifter or will I end up just running around in circles?
